Jews and Race in the Civil Rights Era:
Comparing America and South Africa
Jews were disproportionately represented among those who fought segregation in South Africa and the American South. How can we explain their outsized involvement in these civil rights struggles? Were the backgrounds and motivations of the activists the same? Did any Jews stand in staunch support of white supremacy? And how did the responses of the broader communities compare?
