Midrasha Melton proudly celebrates 20 years of inspiring adult Jewish learning in Cape Town.
To mark this milestone, we are launching a special International Scholars’ Programme, with this course opening the series.
We are honoured to welcome Gila Fine as our inaugural International Scholar.
Unpacking the Talmudic Drama: The Tale of Yalta the Shrew
The rabbis of the Talmud were the greatest storytellers of Jewish history. Their stories – worlds of drama, of conflict, of passion and emotion, held together in three short lines – are literary masterpieces. This course introduces students to the world of aggada, imparting the textual skills, literary techniques, and historical background required to read, and unpack, the stories of the Talmud. Over 4 lessons and through a close reading of the comedy of Yalta (Berakhot 51b), we will learn how to uncover the depths of the Talmudic drama, exploring its relevance to our time.
Gila Fine is the author of The Madwoman in the Rabbi’s Attic: Rereading the Women of the Talmud, winner of the 74th National Jewish Book Award and the 2024 Rabbi Sacks Book Prize. She is a lecturer of rabbinic literature, exploring the tales of the Talmud through philosophy, literary criticism, psychoanalysis, and pop-culture. Gila serves on the faculties of Shalem College, the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, the Tikvah Scholars Program, the Nachshon Project, and the London School of Jewish Studies, and has taught thousands of students at conferences and communities across the Jewish world. She is the recipient of the Maimonides Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Haaretz has called her “a young woman on her way to becoming one of the more outstanding Jewish thinkers of the next generation.”
